Single & Expecting a baby

Single & Expecting a baby

In today’s world, the idea of being a single mum may seem daunting at first.  Many women who face an unplanned pregnancy, or who face an unexpected break-up while pregnant, worry about their futures and are faced with a series of life-changing decisions.  While some feel confident that carrying on with the pregnancy is right for them, others struggle with whether to parent, terminate the pregnancy, or place the child for adoption.

For those who will become parents without an involved partner, Options provides ongoing support.  Our Single-Mums-to-Be group meets regularly and provides a sense of community and important educational information for women who are single and expecting.  We find that many of our stories are similar, and we're able to share laughter, encouragement, hope, and inspiration.  To each group meeting, we invite a special guest.  Our guest is often someone who has "been there" and who can share her experience of what it was like to go through pregnancy and the early (or later) years of raising a child (or children) as a single parent.  Other guests include speakers on benefits and community resources. At every group, our members have the opportunity to socialise, and those who are looking for a flatshare opportunity have the opportunity to meet other likeminded women.

Being the only parent of a child is a courageous step. While single parenting (or parenting in general, for that matter!) is by no means an easy task, around the world there are success stories of women who parent their children as single parents. One of our recent special guests shared an inspiring story of how she pulled herself together after her breakup with the baby's father and was able to continue her education and give birth to a beautiful dauther.  Now, years down the line, she is married with other children, but she has never forgotten what she learned during her time as a single parent.  She shared that although single motherhood is daunting, it is also an achievable challenge, and often draws people together in strong ways.  She emphasized the role of family, friendship (especially with other mums), and community in helping single mothers go about the challenge of single motherhood. It is indeed a challenge, but one with many possible rewards!
